The Robotics Team is a co-ed team/club at Gulf Breeze High School. We have 27 students from various backgrounds and all grades (9-12) in our club. We have members in the Soundwave Marching Band, the GBHS Dolphin Football Team, the GBHS Soccer Team (boys and girls), AFJROTC, foreign language societies, Mu Alpha Theta Math Honors Society, and exceptional education. Our students have varying degrees of interest, but they have one common interest, and that is robotics. Gulf Breeze Robotics has 42 days from kick-off to competition day to build their robot, design their product exhibit, program their robot, participate in community service and mentor younger students in robotics. The students are very excited to be competing at Emerald Coast BEST Saturday, November 3, 2018, at the University of West Florida.
BEST Robotics is a rigorous and thoroughly engaging robotics competition whose mission is to engage and excite students about engineering, science, and technology as well as inspire them to pursue careers in these fields. Through participation in the BEST, Inc. project-based STEM program, students learn to analyze and solve problems utilizing the Engineering Design Process, which helps them develop technological literacy skills. These are the skills that industry seeks in its workforce and that our students need to be competitive for these jobs.
More than 850 middle and high schools and over 18,000 students participate in the competition. This year, even more teams than ever will compete at UWF.
Gulf Breeze Robotics must place first or second in at least one of the two different fields of competition in order to advance to the South's BEST Regional competition, which is held at Auburn University in early December.
As a result of participating in BEST, students…
• Understand the practical use of math concepts and applied physics
• Solve real-world science and engineering problems, training that is transferable to all academic disciplines and career pursuits
• Gain an increased interest in engineering, math, and science
• Understand what engineers do — the engineering profession is “demystified”
• Experience “design-to-market” product development
• Receive recognition and acclaim typically reserved for their peers in sports
Students become competent and confident in:
• Abstract Thinking
• Self-Directed Learning
• Teamwork
• Project Management
• Decision-Making
• Problem-Solving
• Leadership
